The transfer window this summer has been filled with blockbuster transfers as clubs look to strengthen their team in order to give a good fight and have a good season.
One common thing this season though, is the fact that more than half of the clubs in the premier league, have broken their transfer record, in order to get the vital player to help them have a good season. In this article though, we examine the eleven record breaking transfers to have happened;
Paul Pogba – Juventus to Manchester United £93m
Manchester United signed Paul Pogba for a world record fee this summer to send a statement to their rivals ahead of the season. Pogba who was a former Manchester United player never cut it at the club initially and forced a move to Juventus where he proved his qualities, winning several titles and also leading Juventus to the Champions league final. Pogba would be looking to assert his authority in Manutd’s midfield and should be a delight for Manchester United fans for years to come.
Saido Mane – Southampton to Liverpool£36m
Liverpool broke their transfer record to sign Mane from Southampton this summer after Jurgen Klopp told the Liverpool board to go all out to sign the Southampton wing-wizard. The fee surpassed the 35 million pounds Liverpool paid Newcastle for former striker, Andy Carroll. The Senegalese international has established himself in the premier league after joining Southampton from Salzburg three years ago with dazzling performances most notably against Liverpool which eventually caught the eye of the Liverpool boss.
Christian Benteke – Liverpool to Crystal Palace £32m
He was tipped to be the next big thing after joining Liverpool two years ago following his impressive performances for Aston Villa. Liverpool signed him to ease the absence of Luis Suarez who left for Barcelona. Unfortunately, while Suarez blossomed, Benteke failed to deliver and was constantly ignored by Jurgen Klopp. Even when given an opportunity, he just never cut it and Liverpool will be delighted to recoup the money invested in the Belgian.
Andre Ayew – Swansea City to West Ham£20.5m
Andre Ayew was signed by Swansea City from Marseille with a lot of promise and duly delivered with impressive performances for the Welsh outfit. His performances though didn’t get unnoticed as he was eventually signed by West Ham for a club record fee this summer. The unfortunate thing though is, his debut did not last more than twenty minutes as he was stretched off and will not return till late December.
Sofiane Boufai – Lille to Southampton £16m
Southampton completed the signing of the mesmerizing winger this week to add to their squad after having a good season with Lille. The winger is said to be a very good dribbler of the ball and can always get the goals if he tones down his attitude problems. Southampton’s coach, Claude Puel is also familiar with the Moroccan winger having been a coach in the French league and he’ll be hoping Boufai can bring a lot of good fortunes to the club this season.
Borja Baston – Atletico Madrid to Swansea City £15.5m
Swansea City completed the signing of the Atlético Madrid striker Borja Bastón for a club record fee of £15.5m.The 23-year-old was said to be a replacement for André Ayew, who joined West Ham United for £20.5m on Monday. Borja, who was born in Madrid, is a product of the Atlético academy but has spent the past five seasons out on loan. The Spaniard scored 18 La Liga goals on loan at Eibar and 22 goals at Real Zaragoza the previous year.
Jordan Ibe – Liverpool to Bournemouth £15m
The former Liverpool winger joined Bournemouth after been on the frindges most of the time at the Anfield club. Ibe was one who had a lot of promises and Liverpool looked to him as the replacement for Raheem Sterling who joined Manchester city for a record fee at that time. Unfortunately, Ibe never lived up to expectation and often found himself restricted to playing only cup games before sealing a club record switch to Bournemouth.
Ahmed Musa – CSKA Moscow to Leicester city £15m
Leicester city had a very good 2015/16 season, winning the league against all odds and in truth, they did it with the same XI all game and were lucky not to fall short due to injuries. This summer due to their schedules, injuries/ fatigues are bound to happen, that is why they’ve gone all out to add the depth that has been lacking. Nigerian international, Ahmed Musa was the first point of call as his similarity to Jamie Vardy made them go all out to sign the striker for a club record fee.
Roberto Pereyra – Juventus to Watford £13m
Watford completed the signing of midfielder Roberto Pereyra from Juventus in a deal worth an initial £10.4m, potentially rising to £13m.The 25-year-old attacking midfielder represented Udinese for three seasons from 2011 before joining Juve. He made 52 appearances in 2014-15 and featured in the Champions League final, but found his chances limited last season.Pereyra also has 10 caps for Argentina and reached the 2015 Copa América final with the national team. His performance against Chelsea though will be a positive sign for the Watford fans to look forward to.
Jeff Hendrick – Derby to Burnley £10.5m
Burnley were fairly reserved for most of the transfer window after returning to the Premier League, targeting quality over quantity.But in Steven Defour for £7.5m, a player once linked with Manchester United, and Jeff Hendrick for £10.5m, a player who shone for the Republic of Ireland at Euro 2016, the Clarets have two new individuals that can help them have a better season in the premier league.
Nacir Chadli – Tottenham to West Brom£13m
West Brom signed Nacer Chadli from Tottenham for a club record fee of £13million. Belgium international Chadli spent three years at Spurs and becomes Albion’s third signing of a frustrating summer with boss Tony Pulis targeting a host of signings before Wednesday’s deadline.
12. Ryan Mason – Tottenham to Hull City £13m
After a summer of limited transfer business thanks to uncertainty about manager (now-ex) Steve Bruce, followed by upheaval with regard to the club’s ownership situation, Hull splashed out a record £13m on Tottenham midfielder Ryan Mason a day before the deadline.The previous top mark had been the £10m spent on Abel Hernandez back in 2014, with the one-cap England international tasked with adding depth and bringing more Premier League experience to the squad at the KCOM Stadium.
13. Didier N’Dong – Lorient to Sunderland £13.6m
Sunderland enjoyed great success when they raided Lorient for Lamine Kone in January and went back to the Ligue 1 club on deadline to land 22-year-old Gabonese midfielder Didier N’Dong for a new Wearside record.The £13.6m fee was marginally more than the £13m the Black Cats paid for former top buy Asamoah Gyan back in 2010 after the World Cup in South Africa.
